Debra K. Hannula is a Washington State attorney. For 12 years she practiced criminal law in the Seattle area, working for two public defender agencies. She spent 10 years as a judge pro tempore in Municipal, District and Superior Courts, hearing both criminal and civil cases. In 2003 Debra co-chaired the Taskforce On Officer-Involved Domestic Violence with Justice Barbara Madsen. The taskforce wrote police-perpetrated domestic violence policies for the Tacoma Police Department and authored a bill signed into law by Governor Locke whereby all police agencies in Washington State must have policies and procedures to handle police-perpetrated domestic violence. Debra was the Director of Legal Services for a domestic violence survivors’ women’s shelter and has served on numerous boards, including Washington Women Lawyers, the Northwest Battered Women’s Coalition and BookMentors. She joined the board of Trauma Help For Women in 2022. For the past eleven years, she has been the Chair of the Kelly Ann Brown Foundation. Debra’s past writings include articles for The Review, Roman Catholic Women Priests Canada and Real Change, a Seattle weekly newspaper. Debra is the content writer and editor for the kellyannbrownfoundation.org. Debra co-authored Somany’s Story: A Buddhist girl’s survival before, during and after the Khmer Rouge with her friend Somany Pum. Debra lives with her family in Seattle.
