Debra Hannula is a Washington State attorney licensed since 1983. She currently serves as in-house counsel for The Patrick Group and as judge pro tempore for Seattle Municipal Court.
Debra spent 10 years as a public defender in the Seattle area and another decade serving as a judge pro tempore in Municipal, District and Superior Courts, hearing both criminal and civil cases. She also served as Director of Legal Services for a women's shelter.
In 2003, she co-chaired the Taskforce On Officer-Involved Domestic Violence with Justice Barbara Madsen. The taskforce wrote police-perpetrated domestic violence policies for the Tacoma Police Department and authored a bill signed into law by Governor Locke requiring all police agencies in Washington State to have policies and procedures to handle police-perpetrated domestic violence.
Debra is regular contributo Real Change, an independent Seattle newspaper focused on social justice and advocacy. Her articles focus on constitutional law, civil rights, and immigration enforcement, including investigations into federal challenges to birthright citizenship and violations of Washington's sanctuary laws by ICE operations.
She currently serves as President-Elect of Washington Women Lawyers State Board and chaired the Kelly Ann Brown Foundation for 14 years. She has served on numerous boards including the Northwest Battered Women's Coalition and BookMentors.
As an author, Debra co-authored It's All About The Face with master esthetician Rachel Christopherson and co-wrote Somany's Story: The Ghost Under My Bed with Somany Pum, chronicling a Buddhist girl's survival before, during, and after the Khmer Rouge. Both will be published (hopefully) soon.
She lives with her husband in Seattle.
